So your skincare routine is sorted, full of clean, nourishing and active ingredients to protect and replenish your skin, but what are you applying on top of it?

Generations of today are all about incredible skincare – gone are the days of using big-brand products in pretty packaging just because they feel nice (as they’re laden with silicone) and smell nice (thanks to synthetic fragrances). Now we’ve become skin savvy, we want science that works, and we demand clean, active products without harmful chemicals, plus celeb-worthy complexions as a result!

Yet so many of us continue to add foundations full of potentially harmful ingredients on top of our carefully selected skincare products. With so many big makeup brands around, and exciting new products with flash packaging, plus influencer and celebrity recommendations at the back of our mind, it’s easy to buy into the latest foundation trends. But our skin absorbs what we apply to it, which is great for our active skincare, but do we really know what’s in our foundation layer?

What’s lurking?

Potentially harmful ingredients are still in many foundations, and although most of them haven’t been “proven” to be toxic (and hence aren’t restricted) many studies have linked substances such as parabens and talc to cancers. We don’t know about you, but we’d rather play it safe (remember when smoking wasn’t deemed unhealthy!). So if you want to avoid these, you’ll want to steer clear of ingredients such as butylparaben, methylparaben and propylparaben, as well as talc. Mineral oil – not to be confused with mineral makeup – is another common and cheap ingredient, which can have a clogging effect and doesn’t benefit the skin. No thanks!

So what to use instead?

Firstly, you’ll want to ensure you’re using SPF protection every day, without fail. The sun is the number one cause of aging skin, and it’s harming our skin rain or shine, summer or winter! Some foundations claim SPF, which is great, however this will often be only SPF15, and with the small amount of foundation we use, it won’t be enough to protect your skin. Instead, start with a clean SPF base that isn’t greasy. We love O Cosmedics Mineral Pro as it’s SPF30, contains zinc oxide physical protection (rather than chemical sunscreen) and gives a beautiful velvet finish to the skin, without shine.

Our absolute favourite foundation is the O Cosmedics 1Skin Treatment Foundation, a silky and high performing makeup that actually benefits your skin. Natural ingredients replace silicones, designed to hydrate and protect the skin with a velvety finish. Desert Date Oil, Cocoa Butter and Jojoba Oil all help repair and nourish the skin, and 20% of the formula is made from organic fruit extracts, to help fight environmental stress and support elasticity and collagen in the skin. And most importantly, O Cosmedics is free from any nasties such as parabens, mineral oils, fragrances, sulphates, petrochemicals or artificial colours,! We’ll happily put this one on top of our precious serums.
